Description of Wilderness Area or Park

Veloured in dense green moss, 400-year-old cottonwood trees congregate on the side of the Elk River at Morrissey Bridge. A nature walk steers you around wet spots and avoids sensitive cottonwood roots.

This forest is managed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The trail, less than a kilometre in length, was developed with interpretive signs in collaboration with Tembec, Wildsight, College of the Rockies, and the Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program.

Key Access Points to this Wilderness Area or Park

This spectacular old-growth forest is located 16 km (10 mi) southeast of Fernie on Highway # 3. Cross the Elk River on the the Morrissey Bridge, and you will find the trail immediately on your left.

Highlights of this Wilderness Area or Park

The park protects some of the biggest, oldest black cottonwoods in the world, interspersed in an old-growth western red cedar forest. Close to town, see 400-year-old cottonwood trees along a short walking trail.
