Description of Group or Organizational Experience

Join Flathead Audubon for two hours of birding along Bigfork's Wild Mile Nature Trail every Wednesday morning in May and June. This trail is level and appropriate for all ages.

Meet hike leader Neal Brown at 9 a.m. at the EAST trailhead of the Wild Mile Nature Trail. Bring binoculars, if possible. (From Bigfork, travel east on MT Highway 209 to the Kearney Rapids Bridge. Limited parking is available on the north shore of the Swan River.) Carpooling from downtown Bigfork is encouraged. (Carpoolers should meet at 8:30 a.m. at Showthyme!) Call Neal Brown at 837-5018 for more information.

With a trailhead right in town, the Swan River Nature Trail is a focal project of local residents committed to maintaining public access along this wild stretch of the Swan River. Once the old highway to the Swan Valley, this level trail follows the Swan River east out of Bigfork. The trailhead is at the east end of Grand Avenue, a couple of blocks up the hill past the Bigfork Inn.

The gated, mile-long non-motorized section overlooks the rushing white water of Swan River's "wildmile," scene of May kayak races. The road continues for another mile past the Bigfork Dam to the new Kearney Rapids Bridge at Swan River Road bridge. Horseback riders, bikers and skiers also use this road.

If you're unable to join Neal, this is still a great riverside trail to experience on your own!

Or if Tuesdays are better, join Anne Morely of the Montana Native Plant Society for a free naturalist amble along the Swan River Nature Trail. Find out more at:
