A Short Introduction to the Site

Nanton's orange and green grain elevators are rare survivors among the thousands of such railway loading points that once anchored communities across the Canadian Prairies. These, too, were slated for demolition, and were saved by the community which raised funds to purchase and paint them.

Full Description of the Historical Site or Museum

The Nanton & District Grain Elevator Historical & Cultural Society formed when the Community of Nanton realized the last three grain elevators were slated for demolition in the Spring of 2001.

The Society has full title to the land and buildings.

The current Board and Community are grateful to the volunteers along with donations from Members and "Friends of the Elevators" who kept focused for three years on their objective to keep the elevators standing. Since 2004 donations have allowed the Society to move forward with repairs to the inside and painting of the orange elevator. The green elevator, as well as the coal shed, were painted as well.

The Society is moving forward with a business plan and ideas for the next three to five years as well as beyond.

This is an exciting project to be participating in and the Society welcomes anyone wishing to be a part of a world class unique venue for the education and preservation of our agricultural roots.

Don't Miss This When Visiting

The town of Nanton itself is a destination for antique collectors.
