Certifying Your Wildlife Habitat

Whether you own fifty acres in the backcountry or live in an apartment building, anyone can participate in the National Wildlife Federation's program to make your small piece of Earth wildlife-friendly.

In order to be certified, you must provide from a selection of options regarding food, water, shelter, places to raise young, and use sustainable garden practices. The requirements are outlined on the NWF website and certification application.

The goal is to attract beneficial insects, such as butterflies and bees, as well as birds, bats and other small animals to your yard and endeavor to establish a balanced, safe micro-ecosystem for them. Participants are encouraged to learn about and utilize organic and natural products in lieu of pesticide and herbicides, such as composting and worms, and organic gardening practices.

The idea is create a small, balanced ecosystem where all species of plants, animals, insects and birds can find a safe haven.
