Tours of Elk Valley Coal’s Fording River and Elkview coal mines take place throughout the summer from the Visitor Centres in Elkford and Sparwood. Sparwood also offers a larger-than-life mural tours depicting life as it used to be. You’ll see displays of artifacts from the underground mining days. Brochures for the mining walking tour are available at the Visitor Centre. Sparwood is also home to one of the world’s largest tandem axle dump truck – Terex Titan. It weighs 260 tons and the truck’s box can accommodate 2 Greyhound buses. You can’t miss it - located just off Highway #3.

Coal Mine Tours can be arranged during the summer from the Visitor Centres. Transportation is provided to the Mine Site from the Visitor Centre. The Elkford Visitor Centre is located at 4A Front Street and the Sparwood Visitor Centre is located at 141A Aspen Drive. Tours depart from Elkford on Saturday at 10 am and from Sparwood: Tues/Wed/Thurs at 1 pm.
