Description of Lodging Property

Country Encounters Accommodations is located in the National Historic site of downtown Coleman in what was originally The Coleman Mercantile Building. The heritage building features three guest rooms, each uniquely decorated with their own comforts.

The building, originally was built in 1904 as a general store. It is the oldest commercial building in Coleman and built by Edmund Disney. Upon completion, the mercantile was a “modern store” even boosting “cash carriers” . The Coleman mercantile company closed its door in 1913. The building continued to house general stores right up until 1939. Then it housed a barber shop for awhile and in 1944 it underwent another change to become home to Pass Home Electric.

The building later was the site of Home Hardware owned by Russel Montalbetti.,grandson of one of the original settlers in the area. In 1998 ,Mark and Dawn Rigby bought the building from Russel and commenced the long journey to its present use B&B and antique store.

The building is a two story wood frame structure with heavy bracketed cornice and a unique five-sided orial window that was topped with a tower in days gone bye. The windows are located in the twenties room, now a breakfast area but formerly a dentist's office. Much of the original wood work and trim have been lost over the years so the Rigbys have endeavoured to recreate what could have been. The living /dinning area was the old store room and upstairs where 3 apartments were located now serve as the three guest rooms, some family rooms and the guest lounge (which still contain original trim work)
