Description of Professional Guided Experience

Want to explore the deep backcountry of Glacier National Park, but don't know where to start? You might consider a guided backpacking trip with Glacier Guides, the lone concessionaire authorized by the National Park Service for hiking and backpacking on the park's 700-mile trail system.

Glacier Guides have been leading trips in Glacier since 1983. They will work with you to tailor a backcountry outing to meet your specific preferences, whether it's a day hike or a 10-day backpacking trip. They also offer standard backpacking trips of 3, 4, 6, or 10 days. You can travel with your own group or meet new folks in your group. Their experienced guides will provide all the equipment you need and cook you up homemade wilderness meals.

The company also doubles as a rafting company, Montana Rafting Co., and they can set you up with a one-day or multi-day whitewater trip on the North Fork or Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Or you can mix-and-match with a combo hiking/rafting trip. If you want to stay on land, but with a bit less roughing it, you can also arrange to stay at one of the park's two backcountry stone chalets. Explore the company's web site or contact them directly for more details.

The owners (Randy, Cris and Denny) and their guides are well known and respected in the Flathead Valley. Cris Coughlin, for example, has served as a city councilor and mayor in Whitefish. They take seriously their responsibility as environmental stewards of Glacier and the greater Crown of the Continent region. Their environmental efforts include using biodiesel, electric hybrid vehicles, and purchasing wind power and hydro power (as a second option) to fulfill their electric needs. They have converted all of our light bulbs to more efficient compact fluorescent.

Freshly made dinners are always scrumptious in the wilderness, but they're especially tasty in Glacier because the Guides go out of their way to purchase organic and local food for our trips.

In 1997, the company founded and sponsor Rafting for Refuse, an annual river clean up on the Middle Fork and North Fork of the Flathead River.
