I was just at Goat Haunt two weeks ago and backpacked to Francis Lake. We took the HMS International from Waterton and from there set out on our backpacking trip. They call it the "backdoor" to Glacier National Park. Riding the boat there is a great way to get further into the backcountry while skipping the 9 mile hike.

About this Web Cam

Goat Haunt is the most northerly outpost in Glacier National Park, so north in fact that the easiest way to get there is to go through Canada. Located on the southern end of Waterton Lake, Goat Haunt is one of the least visited sections of the park. Only about 30,000 visitors a year manage to visit this remote gem.

The Goat Haunt webcam is located at the Glacier National Park ranger station, which also doubles as a customs checkpoint. All park visitors are welcome to visit Goat Haunt for the day, but hikers headed south need to clear customs with Glacier National Park rangers. Unfortunately for the world's first international peace park, the U.S. government only permits US and Canadian residents to clear customs and hike into the United States from Goat Haunt.

One of my favorite backpacking trips begins at Logan Pass in Glacier along the Highline Trail. Follow the trail along the flowerful Garden Wall to Granite Park wilderness campground (or the nearby backcountry chalet). Continue north along the Highline Trail, and keep a keen eye out for wolverines near Ahern Pass. This stretch of trail is one of the best places in the world to spot this rare and shy member of the weasel family. A second night at Fifty Mile Campground will provide a scenic resting spot astride the Continental Divide. The next day is mostly downhill to Goat Haunt, where you can either catch the boat to Waterton townsite or you can hike the shoreline trail.

About this Place

No roads lead to this section of the park so most visitors board the launch “The International” in Waterton Lakes National Park for the trip down to the U. S. side of Waterton Lake. Hikers can also access this area either by an eight mile hike from the town of Waterton or a much longer hike through the heart of Glacier’s northern wilds.
