Granite Park and Sperry Chalets were constructed by the Great Northern Railroad in the early 1900's to accommodate tourists who came to Glacier National Park on the train. Originally, there was a series of backcountry chalets and tent camps a one-day ride apart, that visitors would reach by horseback as they traveled through the park. After World War II, many of the chalets fell into disrepair and were razed. Only two remain. Sperry Chalet operates as a full service hotel that can be reached by hiking or horseback riding. Granite Park Chalet operates as a hostel and is accessible by hiking only.
These historic chalets are part of a bygone era. Sperry Chalet has 17 rooms, Granite Park Chalet has 12 rooms- in beautiful, rustic stone buildings amid high alpine splendour.

On our visit to Sperry Chalet, we rode horses up from Lake McDonald Lodge to the chalet, saving our selves for the hike to Comeau Pass and Sperry Glacier the next day. Be sure to find time to scramble up Lincoln Peak for fabulous views. We hiked back down to Lake McDonald Lodge, not only enjoying great scenery, but saving the cost of the horse ride, too. Although the views and and experience were great, perhaps the best thing about the trip was the food... not to be missed!
