Description of Group or Organizational Experience

Experience the Crown of the Continent up close and personal from two wheels on the longest off-pavement bike route in the world. The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) is North America's premier off-pavement route, crisscrossing the Continental Divide from Banff, Alberta, to Antelope Wells, New Mexico.

Mapped by Adventure Cycling Association, the Great Divide Route is defined by the word "remote." Its remoteness is matched by its spectacular terrain and scenery. You can find maps and a route narrative on Adventure Cycling's website: http://adventurecycling.org/routes/greatdivide.cfm.

In 2011, Adventure Cycling is also running a self-contained inn-to-inn tour, Cycle Divide, MT, see their website for details: http://www.adventurecycling.org/tours.

Another great place to learn more about regional biking options and the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is Glacier Cyclery in Whitefish, Montana, run by long-time owners Jan and Ron Brunk.

Read more about the Great Divide Route below in Aaron Teasdale's "Ten Top Touring Areas" article (see PDFs), which was featured originally in Adventure Cyclist magazine, Adventure Cycling's member publication. Or check out this three minute video post to Vimeo by the Montana Office of Tourism: http://vimeo.com/12769622.

Adventure Cycling Association is the largest bicycling organization in the country. Founded in 1976 as Bikecentennial, Adventure Cycling Association is America's premier nonprofit organization dedicated to bicycle travel, with 44,500 members nationwide. Headquartered in Missoula, Montana, Adventure Cycling is America's bicycle travel inspiration and resource, offering many programs for cyclists, including a national network of bicycle touring routes and organized trips. Adventure Cycling researches and produces cycling maps for one of the largest route networks in the world at 38,158 miles (and growing). They publish Adventure Cyclist magazine, lead bicycle tours, work on bicycle advocacy projects, sell bike travel gear, and provide trip planning resources for bicycle travelers.
