Description of Group or Organizational Experience

Approximately 1300 grizzly bears roam the heart of the Rocky Mountains where Montana meets southern Alberta and British Columbia. Perhaps better than anyone, Chuck Jonkel knows where they roam and why they’re there. A veteran biologist who has spent vast stretches of time in the wild, Chuck has taken on the grizled, gruff mannerisms of the great bruin itself. This only enriches his field courses for the Great Bear Foundation, Glacier Institute, Nature Conservancy, and Waterton Natural History Association.

In spring, Jonkel and his students will peer into the marshy fen of Pine Butte Nature Preserve near Choteau or up at the greening avalanche chutes of Glacier National Park to safely spy a grizzly bear.

In July, Jonkel leads two courses about bruins for the Glacier Institute:

Glacier's Grizzlies: July 10-11, 2010
Glacier's Grizzlies and Black Bears: July 9
