We did the hike in December as far as Josephine Falls...not much snow, but the trail was well-packed by someone on snowshoes. There is a large parking area at the trailhead, and a sign with a map. The falls were mostly iced over, but water was cascading down through breaks in the ice. We saw 2 interpretive signs along the trail (vegetation and small animals), but they need to be repaired before the spring/summer hiking season.

Signage if insufficient. We missed the turn off as the sign was too small. Once we arrived at the destination, we reviewed the map and headed out on our adventure, which should have taken us to Josephine Falls, Lost Lake and back to our car in about 1 hour (including a little stop at the lake). The signage was SIGNIFICANTLY insufficent! We followed what we thought would be accurate choices according to the map and ended up WAY down the road and having to walk back to the parking lot along the highway (unfortunately at the same time the workers from the coal mine were finishing their shift! Yikers!). So! My advice to Elkford to to increase their signage. Update their map on the entrance to the trail, and add additional signage along the trailway. We are not locals, but we are intelligent people. It was a frustrating hike. Beautiful thru the trails on the way to the falls tho'!

Description of Wilderness Area or Park

Your reward at the end of a 3 km (2 mi) walking trail is rarely-viewed Josephine Falls, a 25 metre (83 foot) tumble of foaming water set in a secluded canyon landscape.

Key Access Points to this Wilderness Area or Park

Highlights of this Wilderness Area or Park

Breathtaking Josephine Falls cascades 25 metres (83 ft) down a steep canyon carved by the Fording River. This picturesque waterfall was discovered in 1905 by Professor Henry F. Osborn and his family, and named in honour of Miss Josephine Osborn, a sweet maid in her teens, who caught the largest trout thus far recorded from that spot. Josephine Falls is the destination of Elkford's most popular trail, a moderate hike. Once at the trailhead, proceed to the Falls which are about 2.3 km. The falls are quite impressive even in mid summer and in a dry year. From the falls you have a couple additional trail options.

Driving Directions to Key Access Points

Once you arrive in Elkford (located on Highway 43), turn east at the four way stop onto the Fording Road. Follow this road for 5 kilometres (3 mi) and watch for Josephine Falls signage at parking lot. Follow the Forests, Falls and Lakes trail to Josephine Falls.
