The Kilmorey Lodge, featured on the National Geographic Crown of the Continent MapGuide, burned to the ground on January 20, 2009. But owner Locklynn Craig plans to rebuild a replica of the historic hotel so that future guests may once again "comfort her in eiderdown at this romantic inn," as recommended by National Geographic.
Nestled between the mountain peaks on the shore of Emerald Bay, in the village of Waterton Park. The historic lodge, one of the original buildings in the townsite, began receiving guests in the late 1920's.
The beautiful log style building was reminiscent of a country inn, furnished with antiques and treasures collected over the years. Photographs from days gone by linen the hallways, a visual history of the lodge and the early years of Waterton Lakes National Park.
The lodge featured 23 unique, romantic guest rooms in the Kilmorey Lodge. Each room was decorated with antique furniture, and a beautiful down comforter on every bed guaranteed a cozy "at home" feeling.
The library lobby complete with large, comfortable couch and fieldstone fireplace welcomed guests to curl up by the warmth with a good book. Fine dining was always a pleasure in the award-winning Lamp Post Dining Room. For the outdoor atmosphere in the summer months, the casual Gazebo Cafe overlooks the serene beauty of Emerald Bay.
The Kilmorey was one of the few Waterton lodges open year-round. It was a popular winter sanctuary for cross-country skiers after a bracing outing on the Akamina Parkway.
The fire apparently started in the laundry room at 3:45 a.m. Guest from Montana and Alberta were safely evacuated before the entire building was engulfed in flames.
An excellent family memoir centered on the Kilmorey Lodge appears in the February 1 Missoulian by Montana writer, Carol Van Valkenburg.
