The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is one of 21 long distance trails that are part of the National Scenic and Historic Trails. It traverses from St. Louis, Mo to Fort Clatsop and returns. The section that borders the southern boundary of the Crolwn of the Continent area is Lewis' return route which he travelled in 1806. He followed an ancient indian trail to the buffalo that had been used by indians for thousands of years.

The trail in the Blackfoot River valley can been accessed from Hywy 200 between the town of Bonner, just east of Missoula, MT and the town of Lincoln is located 58 miles northwest of Helena, MT.
