Naturalist Hike Along the Swan River Nature Trail

Description of Group or Organizational Experience

Local conservationists lead weekly hikes in May and June along Bigfork's Wild Mile of the Swan River to view birds and identify wildflowers.

Volunteer naturalist Anne Morley of the Montana Native Plant Society lead an easy amble on Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Wildflower hikes will be May 5, 12, 19 and 26 & June 2,9,16, 23 and 30 along Bigfork’s Wild Mile of the Swan River. Tuesday hikers should meet in front of Showtyme in downtown Bigfork at 10 a.m.

On Wednesday mornings, Join Neal Brown of Flathead Audubon for two hours of birding along Bigfork's Wild Mile Nature Trail. This trail is level and appropriate for all ages.

Meet at 9 a.m. at the EAST trailhead of the Wild Mile Nature Trail. Bring binoculars, if possible. (From Bigfork, travel east on MT Highway 209 to the Kearney Rapids Bridge. Limited parking is available on the north shore of the Swan River.) Carpooling from downtown Bigfork is encouraged. (Carpoolers should meet at 8:30 a.m. at Showthyme!) Call Neal Brown at 837-5018 for more information.

Bring water, binoculars, hand lens and field guides appropriate to birds and plants.

With a trailhead right in town, the Swan River Nature Trail is a focal project of local residents committed to maintaining public access along this wild stretch of the Swan River. Once the old highway to the Swan Valley, this level trail follows the Swan River east out of Bigfork. The trailhead is at the east end of Grand Avenue, a couple of blocks up the hill past the Bigfork Inn.

The gated, mile-long non-motorized section overlooks the rushing white water of Swan River's "wildmile," scene of May kayak races. The road continues for another mile past the Bigfork Dam to the new Kearney Rapids Bridge at Swan River Road bridge. Horseback riders, bikers and skiers also use this road.

If you're unable to join Neal and Anne, this is still a great riverside trail to experience on your own!
