Comments and Ratings

I love that I can hike with my dog (on leash) on The Whitefish Trail and that there are always areas that you can get away on your own. This trail is shows off this gorgeous area, and is a must-do for all.

Description of Volunteer Opportunity

Be a Trail Partner by hefting a shovel or lending a hand on the Whitefish Trail, a non-motorized, family-friendly trail in the forested hills outside Whitefish, Montana. July 17 is the Grand Opening for the first 12 miles of this trail that eventually will loop around Whitefish Lake.,

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 9:30 at the Lion Mountain Trailhead. The community celebration begins at Depot Park at 4 p.m. with food, raffle and the fun hootenany band, Barnyard Riot.

Trail volunteers are currently available to help complete the final Lion Mountain Loop in time for the Grand Opening. Volunteer slots are available July 7 and 10, 2010.

The first three phases of the Whitefish Trail will officially open to the public on July 17, including the Skyles/Beaver, Lion Mountain, and Lupfer sections.

The “main” trailhead will be located off of Lion Mountain Loop Road, just 1.0 mile west of Whitefish. This trailhead will have a vault toilet, a trailhead kiosk with signage and information, and a large parking area. The second “minor” trailhead will be located off of Skyles Lake Lane, 3.5 miles west of town. This trailhead will have an informational kiosk and parking for six vehicles. The trail can also be accessed from the north end, off of Beaver Lake Road. Although there is limited signage and extremely limited parking, the trail currently connects to Beaver Lake Road, approximately .75 miles before the public fishing access at Beaver Lake. A larger trailhead for the Beaver Lake trails will be constructed in 2011.

The Lion Mountain and Skyles trails are family-friendly trails appropriate for hikers and mountain bikers. Horses are not allowed on Lion Mountain side up to the cliff band due to safety issues and lack of trailer parking. Please ride safely, and keep dogs under strict control at all times.
