Change is glacial in this gateway village, where you can enjoy the same general store, saloon, restaurant, and service station that have served park visitors since 1938.

Located at the West Entrance to Glacier National Park, this village offers most everything a traveler might need before visiting the park. An all-purpose mercantile, a bar, restaurant, gift shop, post office and gas station are in the Village area. It is a quick stroll to the historic Belton Train Depot .

Once you see West Glacier Village, you’ll think time has stood still in this remote corner of Montana. The log buildings here were constructed in 1938 and they haven’t changed much since. Visitors who return are always delighted to find things just the way they used to be.

Glacier National Park was essentially closed during World War II. In 1946, the Lundgren family and Dave Thompson purchased West Glacier Mercantile, which consisted of the main buildings in West Glacier. Several structures have been added over time, but the character and charm of a scenic mountain village still remains.

In 1987, the West Glacier Mercantile Company was awarded a Special Commendation from the U.S. Department of the Interior for “sheltering and protecting the West Entrance of Glacier National Park from inappropriate development” and for maintaining the village’s historic character.

Stroll around, browse through the shops and visit the historic Belton train depot which houses the Glacier Natural History Association book store. The newly renovated Belton Chalet is right across the street.

The Village includes a grocery store, restaurant and bar, post office, ATM machine, pay phones, laundromat and lodging facilities. Wireless Internet access is available at the Going-to-the-Sun Gift Shop, and Glacier Photo offers film and digital services. and the 18-hole Glacier View Golf Course is just one mile from town.
