Whitefish Lake Institute

The Whitefish Lake Institute is a unique member based organization that conducts scientific research and public awareness efforts on local water quality issues.

The Whitefish Lake Institute coordinates efforts to enhance, conserve and protect the natural resources of the Whitefish Lake Watershed and the lifestyles afforded by its natural beauty for present and future generations. The Whitefish Lake Institute partners with various management agencies to ensure that the public receives the best available scientific data.

The organization has established a long-term monitoring program for Whitefish Lake and its tributaries.

A pledged donation of 30 wetland acres along Viking Creek will be protected by the group in perpetuity with some limited public access along an interpretive trail network.

A study conducted in 2005-2006 on gasoline constituent loading in the lake moved the City of Whitefish to approve mitigation measures at City Beach.

WLI is currently partnering with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality to collect data in support of a computer model for non-point source pollution.

The group has also partnered with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to coordinate a lake volunteer monitoring program on twenty lakes between Whitefish and Eureka. WLI regularly speaks to civic groups and school groups; including an annual fish dissection for all Whitefish fourth graders.
